What is breath4cf.ca?
Breath4CF.ca is a
Toronto-based not-for-profit organization established in 2005. They
believe that aside
from medications, physical exercise is the single best way for a person with
Cystic Fibrosis (CF) to preserve their own quality of life, lung function and
longevity. The cost of these extras in addition to medical and nutritional
expenses can be overwhelming to families affected by this disease.
Breath4CF.ca provides assistance to kids,
teenagers and young adults in Canada with CF so that there is no barrier to
participating in life preserving exercise or activity. Assistance is by way of
gym memberships, entry fees, lessons, personal training time, and other actions
that will directly effect the recipients.
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disease affecting
approximately 3,400 children and adults in Canada, making it the most common,
fatal genetic disease affecting young Canadians. Cystic Fibrosis is the result
of a defective gene that causes the body to produce an abnormally thick, sticky
mucus that clogs the lungs and leads to life-threatening lung infections. These
thick secretions also obstruct the pancreas, preventing digestive enzymes from
reaching the intestines to help break down and absorb food.
Breath4CF.ca is a
relatively small organization and Team Healthy Butcher members will see the results
of fundraising activities directly helping CF patients.
Why cycling?
Out of all sports to choose, why cycling? Everyday
cycling, where the exercise leaves you breathing heavily but not being out of
breath, is an effective and enjoyable form of aerobic exercise. This is the type
of exercise that is most effective at promoting good health. Cycling reduces the
risk of serious conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity
and the most common form of diabetes. Cycling will help with weight management
and can improve your mood by reducing stress and raising self-esteem.
Most importantly, cycling is one of the few physical
activities which can be undertaken by the majority of the population as part of
a daily routine. There are no real age barriers to cycling. Unlike jogging
which pounds joints, cycling is easier on your joints and fosters increase
circulation and improvement coordination.
